Mubadala Investment Company has officially begun construction on a breathtaking waterfront enhancement project at Al Maryah Island in Abu Dhabi, marking a major milestone in the emirate’s tourism and urban development plans.
On 20 July 2025, Mubadala’s Deputy Group CEO Waleed Al Mokarrab Al Muhairi, alongside Dr Bakheet Al Katheeri, CEO of UAE Investments, ceremonially broke ground for the new waterfront initiative. This strategic move aligns with Mubadala’s mission to position Al Maryah Island as a prime global lifestyle destination by offering elevated leisure, entertainment, and hospitality experiences.
Central to the design is a 30 m tall luminous sphere positioned over water, surrounded by 1,000 AI-powered jets that will create synchronized water displays reaching 75 m high, set to music by composer Ramin Djawadi.
The spectacle is being crafted by WET, the world-renowned water features studio behind projects like the Bellagio fountains in Las Vegas.
Visitors can expect:
A newly extended sea boardwalk, bringing guests right to the water’s edge.
A shaded outdoor cooling system for comfort during the hot season.
New F&B zones and event-ready open public spaces to enrich the community experience.
Dr Al Katheeri stated, “This project will deliver iconic elements that elevate the quality of life and offer a diverse experience… reinforcing the island’s position as a premier lifestyle destination.”
The waterfront is part of a broader strategy to enhance Abu Dhabi as a global tourism hub.
Recently launched projects like Disneyland Abu Dhabi and Sphere support this tourism-led momentum.
Over 37,000 new tourism jobs were added in the first half of 2025, further propelled by high-profile projects such as Al Maryah Waterfront.
This ambitious waterfront overhaul is set to significantly impact Al Maryah Island’s real estate landscape:
Enhanced Property Values
Proximity to iconic attractions and public spaces will make the island even more desirable.
Higher Rental Yields
Enhanced foot traffic and year-round activities will benefit residential and retail rentals.
Investor Confidence
Mubadala’s involvement signals long-term stability and strong potential returns.
Lifestyle Appeal
The project complements nearby luxury developments—Seamont Autograph, St Regis The Residences, Four Seasons Private Residences, and W Residences, all within 1–2 km—by offering vibrant public spaces and world-class entertainment.
Formerly known as Sowwah Island, renamed in 2012, Al Maryah spans approximately 114 hectares and hosts key landmarks including The Galleria mall, ADGM, Cleveland Clinic, and major hotels.
Ongoing development since 2007 aims to cement its role as Abu Dhabi’s central lifestyle and business district.
Mubadala’s revitalised Al Maryah Waterfront is more than just a development—it’s a transformative lifestyle destination. With cutting-edge design, iconic water features, and upgraded amenities, this project is poised to elevate Al Maryah Island’s allure, boost real estate values, and anchor Abu Dhabi’s future as a world-class tourism and investment hub.
